Re baby things, I make a lot of them. No kids of my own, but many friends, godkids, cousins, nephews. Now, each gets a lace baby-blanky if I can manage it (Debbie Bliss alphabet blocks or old knitters 9-patch lace castle.
When I was in college I made a tiny Norwegian sweater for a baby cousin. Thirty years later I met the young lawyer at another cousin's wedding. As I talked to her mom she suddenly said: YOU made me that sweater! I still have it! So it's definitely worth it!
